You are basing your assumptions on biased sources, the apple daily (clearly racist) and the policeman in question. I don't know the DUI guy here, he clearly deserves some punishment, but you don't know all the details of the case just like me , so Id say hold your horses until you find out more. The guy was a DUI on a scooter and I don't see any real evidence that he attacked the cop, so getting shot seems to have been an extreme move. What it actually looks like to me is that the cop got excited and trigger happy and the guy that was shot may have a case for compensation. The cop does not seem to have been attacked or assaulted.

It's rare in Taiwan for cops to shoot 'runners' so it needs to be investigated. The lack of furore in the usual foreigner bashing media tells its own tale.

As others have mentioned we need more details from all sides.

And you, sir, are using exactly the same tactic as you did in the Zain Dean thread and with the same intended purpose.

I have more than enough "details" of this case to make up my own mind about it. What you accept as evidence, from your biased point of view, and what I accept as such are clearly different. Minimize, minimize, minimize. Makes you look good to your friends, doesn't it (and I know who those friends are)?
Please don't try to tell me about local media sources. I work in the translation industry and I am more than able to read local sources critically (can you say the same?). The report called him "fat" and "foreigner." Maybe a tad sensational. But racist? Hardly. But don't that let that stop you from your distraction attempt.

He deserves "some punishment?" I'd say severe. That he led police on a high-speed chase in that sort of state, and for so long, justifies the force used against him, attack or no attack (and I believe the former to be FAR more likely). Keep on trying to defend the indefensible.

Well this case didnt even make it to the English newspapers. A non event really.

Im pointing out the racist commentary, constant repetition of 'foreigner' and 'fat' which is immaterial to the case, also mention 'Taiwanese brother helping each other', what more do you want to consider racism?

And you can't just rely on the shooters testimony, that's not how justice works. It has to be investigated.

As mentioned many times, getting shot for doing a runner is highly unusual.

And someone on the other site already answered that, saying No, it isn't.

Seems to me he was shot AFTER the chase, like during the scuffle that took place, so saying he was shot doing a runner is maybe misrepresenting the facts as they are known.

You can find many you tube videos of perps being shot, and not once by the way the cops unloaded several rounds and resisting DUI people trying to do a runner. Headhoncho11 is just trying to make this non event into something sensationalist. It if very rare for a police office to draw their gun and shoot someone here. Also John wasn't shot from behind as some suggest, he was shot through the side. One bullet passing through both legs, bringing him down like the wild boar he was behaving like. AS for those saying the cop only had his shirt ripped or doent show more signes of injury, he was wearing body armor.

Actually it is very unusual , otherwise you would have people coming into hospital or morgue every night in Taiwan that were shot up by the cops! Do you see that as a regular occurrence. No it is not. Kal el even mentioned Tainan cops regularly turn a blind eye to drunk scooter riders (of course Im sure people don't condone this). All the details I have are what was on the report, the DUI guy got rammed from behind, beaten with the cop stick so much that it was bent and them shot. The cop had hardly a scratch on him and a torn breast pocket

So the story that he was assaulted has a lot of holes from an objective perspective. It looks like he got scared or excited and shot the drunk runner in the heat of the moment. Looks like an overreaction as the guy was a drunk on a scooter not an armed criminal with a known record of violence.

Cops are supposed to be trained to minimize risk to civilians, not unnecessarily escalate the situation and to discharge their firearm as a last resort only. The cop had a video of the drunken rider so he probably should have backed off at some point but didn't and escalated it to a very dangerous finale which was not beneficial to civilians on the streets or also could have resulted in death of shot guy, unnecessary escalation. As I said I know the drunken rider was also a danger to people on the streets but the cop made the situation worse not better.

The cop is sober and has training and resources on hand so he should have been able to being a better resolution to the situation than shooting the drunk in the end.

Yes blame the cops for doing their duty and not John. Once John took off, crashed ( a vehicle can be considered a dangerous weapon), acted violenlty, escalated the situation to the point he was considered a violant criminal the Police Officer acted accordingly in bringing him to ground.

The only person who made the situation worse was John. Noboby should be blaming the police for Johns actions. For fucks sake. Lord Lucan alread claimed that John is a trained combat specialist. So you had a guy with skills. The cop shooting him is more than justified.

FWIW, you might be referring to a part where the cops appealed to the spirits in the graveyard for help.

Is this it?

我是來抓壞人的,請好兄弟要幫助台灣人!

Police to John ... PULL OVER

John to Police FUCK YOU!!

「Stop,Stop!Sit down!」

I was only talking about my own experience years ago when I was riding unlicensed ( like most foreigners as I was then, I just ignored the law ) was DUI when I crashed into a young woman on her scooter. Totally my fault as I was totally shitfaced. I signed to pay all her persoanl injuries, lost wages, scooter and things. I was paying it off for a long time. Today I would simply be taken to jail and locked up which is what I deserved back then, but times have changed. Because I paid all her damages charges were less for me. NOt like I was going to lose a license I didnt have already.

Just like another well know drunk whole lotta lotta who brags about having failed all his driving tests yet habitually drives around drunk.

Yes I didnt kill the woman but I could have. Isn't this the whole point of keeping us drunk drivers off the road in the first place.

I still see it as racist. "I'm hear to catch the bad guy. Spirits, help out your fellow Taiwanese!" Clearly turning this into an "us vs. them" situation.

BTW, something nobody has mentioned is that Taiwan has enacted really tough drunk driving laws as of this year, and the president gave a speech just two weeks ago on how Taiwan needs to keep the number of drunk drivers as low as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if cops are under a lot of pressure right now to crack down hard on drunk driving, much more than they have been doing in the past. It's possible from pure conjecture alone that this officer got overzealous in boosting the precinct's conviction rate, causing him to use potentially lethal force to bring the guy down.

Such a smart guy you are. It became a police vs the crim the moment John decided to take off on a dangerous 10km chase that ended up with both him and the police office crashed out. By the way they have conviction rates they have to get for precincts on DUI's? Where did you dream that one up from? More expat mythology.

Yes there has been a severe crackdown because so many fuckwits like John drive around DUI and so many people have been killed or suffered horrific injuries because of people like him. The idea of a crackdown is to get more people to use taxis or have non drinking buddies drive them.
