Confuzius » Someone should do a study on the rate of alcoholism in the foreigner community in Taiwan. I bet the rates would be quite high (higher than each in their own country, unless theres a bunch of Russians in Taiwan-who should probably be excluded from the study).
Yah yah, perpetuating blah blah....its true though, but I dunno why.
Now that would be making another myth come true. Let's not try that. We could have jimip conduct the first part of the interview with all his alco drinking buddies.
I think the person in the video is very lucky things didn't end up much worse and that the cop, while not acting in best practices (which would have been to defuse the situation without injury), will certainly not be reprimanded.
I think people here who are friends with him are emotionally attached and want the best outcome for their buddy even though he showed a tremendous lack of judgement. That's understandable. However, I don't think many people showed the same kind of compassion during the Forand drug bust where a bunch of people were worried about how that arrest would damage the reputation of foreigners and that he should rot in jail etc. So, if people (that may have not known him personally) after this road incident feel that he is damaging the reputation of foreigners and is clearly in the wrong, and people showing compassion have been on the opposite side in the past (where they were quick to judge on drug bust issues), I'd say a lot of how one reacts is not based on right/wrong, but on their association with the person involved. That's fine, but let's admit those biases and the emotion that drives them.
Hang on a minute. You didn't say anything about Engrish teachers. How uncharacteristic.

No, it isn't justifiable to shoot an unarmed man from behind.
From a pragmatic viewpoint rather than emotional, it makes the police look poorly trained and unable to cope with public order situations. 'He hit me so I shot him in the back'? Huh?
Except he wasnt shot from behind. He was shot from side on. The bullet passed through one leg then the other. He wasn't shot in the back either. Another case of an epxat making up bullshit stories about how this police officer acted. The cop wasnt poorly trained either. What do you know about police traning?

I attempted to respond to a post I made elsewhere and was deemed off topic. Wow. Just ....Wow!
Anyway, here's my response again to DB who believes my asking if there was an attempt to go for the cop's gun an absurd question.
Sorry you felt my question was foxy and trollish DB, but it was actually an honest attempt at a quest for truth. I heard another angle and wanted to see if anyone here could shed insight into that possible aspect of the story. I would hope (and do hope) it isn't true, but to call it absurd is ridiculous.
It's 50-50 at best. The bent night stick, the barely visible, yet still evident abrasion to the copper's throat, the torn pocket all indicate a struggle of some sort. Whether he went for the gun or not, there does seem to be evidence of a physical altercation. This does cause one to wonder about the first reports that it was simply a runner from a DUI, doesn't it?
Like you've said, I wasn't there, but neither were you, so where do you get to say that my quest for an answer to a completely plausible possibility is uncalled for? I am not judging him. I, in fact, don't care. I've enjoyed his posts over the years, but that's the extent of it.
I can't help but think how so many of you so chastised me for standing up for my friend so many years ago when he ran afoul of the law. In that case, he fessed up, cleared his friends of wrongdoing and took his punishment like a man. He didn't grass anyone. He didn't endanger any innocent lives with his actions. He went peacefully into that dark dark cell. And he is making the most of his time and has been an inspiration to many who know him in the long years since his incarceration.
Yet these very same posters are now doing the same thing I did and calling out those who question the "facts" of the case. How quickly the coin turns, nu? Look to yourselves dear expats. Reread your posts in the Matty threads and maybe you'll see how these skeptics (of which I don't count myself one) were once your very selves.
Don't drink and drive. It's quite simple. 7 years ago, I got off lucky with a 30K fine after barely being over the limit (2 beers worth) and have never taken the handle bars or wheel with so much as a brandy-filled chocolate in my system since. It hasn't been that difficult an adjustment. That should be common sense. But to take the cops on a chase and then to (possibly) scuffle with them is beyond common. It is insane. So you good friends seem to be more in the know. Did he scuffle or didn't he? That is the crux of the story as I see it. It makes his side of the facts indefensible and all the vitriole y'all have mustered up against Rodeo et al seems ill placed.
NU?

Which one was that? The one where you maligned the other side? While apt in the general sense, that dissing is hardly needed in this instance. In point of fact, the original thread over there was much more timely.

No. Not that one. And I prefer to think of that one as a fun jab said in jest more than a malignation. And I have zero problem with it's temping. Fully expected it to head south for the winter.
They OT'd my post (seen above) over there then thought better of it and brought it back. Strange Days Indeed.
But we are OT ourselves now, aren't we?

He's out. The prosecutor didn't request bail. My friend is sore, extremely embarrassed, but grateful for the support he's gotten from his many friends. His court date hasn't been set yet, but we expect it to be sometime in late September.
By the way, my real name is Tony. Next time you see me call me by that name.

He should be.
And his friends cheering his release as though it has exonerated him should be too. Certainly getting out without bail isn't some kind of moral victory. The court system works biazarrly in Taiwan at times, and that tends to fascinate and infuriate people. Just because it works in this guy's favor now, doesn't mean the "corrupt" and "incompetent" cops finally got one right for god's sake.
I guess my questions will have to wait to be answered:
Did he have a license? What was the BAC? Anything else in his blood that shouldn't have been there? What are the charges? How did/will he plead? What did his letter of contrition say? How far did they chase him? How fast were they going? Why the scuffle? Why the shooting? Why the media silence?
