Full Disclosure: The guy in question is a close personal friend of mine. This is a pretty difficult time for him. It's a pretty difficult time for his friends. Any compassion will be much appreciated. I am sure he was racially profiled. Innocent until proven guilty

At the end of the day, this is a small corner of the internet. Internet forums like this are, as Hannibal says, public. All sorts of things get written on the internet. For example, I have it on good authority that the heir to the British throne has six legs. You read it here first. Or it may not be true. Who cares? I never met the guy.

Some posters, as always, will speculate that such and such a thing happened, and by the time this reaches 12 pages, there will have been a drug-fuelled armed assault on Taipei Central Police by child molesters, led by our suspect. We've already had someone who "heard" he tried to steal the cop's gun.

There has been no assault charge laid by the police. There was no bail bond. The suspect has been allowed to retain his passport. Matters of public record.

Anything posted here by friends of the suspect will be regarded by some as a defence of drink driving and/or failure to stop for police, despite any protestations to the contrary. That's the way internet "debate" works.

The "Hitler Argument" will be introduced on page 15, and I will invoke the "Vietnam Response" on page 13. ("You don't know. You weren't there.")

I'm not at all surprise at the vitriol heaped by some foreigners upon any foreigner who gets in trouble here. Taiwan has a unique expat community made up of moralising do-gooders who have never set a foot wrong in life on the one hand, and on the other hand, drug-crazed criminal lunatics who run around offending the moral sensibilities of the former.

None of this would have happened if Taiwan didn't go Draconian on their drinking and driving laws.

Novaspes » Sarcasm....?

no, if there wasn't a threat of jail time, there would have been no chase. This happens 5 months ago it ends differently.

Well, what are your chances of being shot by the police if you didn't drink and drive, and then flee, in the first place? Pretty much zero.

How hard is it to realize that you've had a drink? Shouldn't be terribly difficult. Most people drink while conscious, and are not drunk or impaired when they start to drink.

So you break the law with the offense that is probably the most totally preventable of any kind of legal violation outside of working illegally at a kindy (probably more preventable than kindy work because no one tells you it's okay to drink and drive, but some buxiban owners will tell you it's okay to teach kindy) and it's the fault of the legal system for imposing prison time as a possible penalty and therefore "forcing" you to flee?

Wow. Just, wow.

No matter what the background story, whether the cop was justified to pull out a gun or not, which we likely won't really ever know without video or witness evidence, common sense says that driving drunk and then trying to get away from people that are licensed and allowed to carry a gun is not usually a good idea. In the back of the mind should be the thought that the one you are getting away from could pull that gun at any time if they feel threatened, and act accordingly (eg pull over as directed)

I simply hope he has learned his lesson and never drives drunk again and in the meantime makes a full recovery.

On a slightly OT note, I do find it disappointing that forumosa always goes down into a flame throwing, name calling hate-fest every time there is a difference of opinion. I wish we could argue the point, not the poster.

He could have learnt that lesson years ago. Also being a teacher one would have thought he had enough brains to know better and adjust his pretences that the law doesn't apply to him.

Kind of unusual, no?

A couple of thoughts:

The cops having used this level of force, and against a foreigner, would not normally be something the powers that be want to get excessive publicity.

No one else was hurt so there are no grass roots complaints to drive such publicity.

As such, I think the situation in the media is basically normal.

Why should there be any grass roots complaints about the police? It's only because of grass roots complaint about drunk drivers having such light penalties that the laws have been changed and that the police are doing their jobs. I find it amusing about how many expats complain the police here are useless but as soon as an expat is caught for criminal activities its the police are corrupt racists.

Nobody targeted John because he was a foreigner. He made himself a target and his actions brought about him being shot. This is not unusual and could happen in any country where you have armed police. Who care about other countries laws this is Taiwan. THe poloce here are not concerned about publicity. Infact publicity is a good thing as other who decide they might try to flee a DUI stop may now consider their actions in the light of the fact they too could be shot.
