What exactly does my weight have to do with this case?

Well, not that my opinion on this is important, but here it is:

Both he and the cops showed a massive lack of judgement.

The cops who took him out were poorly trained it seems. Someone asked why his weight was important; probably because it "justified" the use of more force. That is, he was harder to take down using Cop-fu.

The guy himself obviously messed up, and fortunately didn't hurt anyone else in the process. I wonder if it was well known to his friends that he drove home after drinking? Did they seriously advise against this? Or did anyone tell him, "Hey, it's OK this is Taiwan"? If so, I hope they learn their lesson from this. I don't want to sound like Johnny Churchpants here, but tell your friends not to drink and drive! Especially newbies who may be influenced in the right direction.

The dude got punished for what he did(which were quite bad), which is all right and good (being shot is extreme in the modern world, but I wouldn't expect much less running from the 5-0). However, the racist undertones in the video bother me. This cop is bloody happy that he shot a foreigner... look at the smile. THAT makes me feel fucking worried.

Get out. A Taiwanese waitress smiled when she dropped hot soup in my crotch once. She was embarrassed and incredibly apologetic and that is how she showed it. You know people in Taiwan don't react the same way we do back home given the same circumstances. The cop was under the bright lights for doing something exciting, something ENTIRELY within his rights as a cop to do. It's not HIS fault the schmedia is making him a "hero."

Come on, people. Up your game.

As for the weight issue: He is well over 100KG by their account. His bac was .56%. How much alcohol is that? Hmm. A LOT! It seems he walked through getting bashed with a metal nightstick, BENDING it.

The cop IMO showed incredible restraint. I'd have shot him in the chest four times. I hate zombies.

getting shot isn't punishment and it's not justice. As for those claiming its now another case of a racist cop targeting and foreigner that's just plain bullshit.

He fled on a merry drunken 10km police chase and assaulted the cops.
Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave!

Look, just blame it all on the damned dirty foreigner, yeah? Hell, yeah! That's the way to do it!"
I don't care if he is guilty or innocent. He got a fucked-up police chase and those same dumb twats have fucked up shooting him in the leg. TAIWAN, TAIWAN, TAIWAN! But NOOOOOOOOOOO! Let's blame the foreigner!
PISS THE FUCK OFF! This is a backwater, second-world piss-stain on the face of the planet. You know it, I know it, we ALL know it. Sandy Murray sandman1958@gmail.com

Plenty. It illustrates how big this man was, as well as the difficulty police had when trying to arrest him. The bent metal nightstick is another clue. Yup, as expected, the wagon circling is beginning. "He's our friend, so he right even when he's wrong. Damned racist police. Must be their fault our friend was drunk out of his mind, took police on a 10km drunken chase and needed to be shot in the leg to be brought under control." It's ok to trash other foreigners who behave badly, just as long as it's not one of their friends.

This wasn't a mere mistake. I can honestly say that I have never done anything like this, and never would. And if I ever did, I would expect my friends to condemn my actions in the strongest possible terms. That's being a real friend. Looks like the guy's got a pretty serious substance abuse issue. Getting shot has got to be the clearest possible signal that a change is needed. Hope he gets help, and that his friends stop minimizing what has happened. Their soft, cooing voices will do nothing to help.

That cop was not embarrassed nor apologetic. If you got THAT from THAT video, you have issues. Please, PLEASE... I hope I never do anything to make you apologetic or embarrassed.

Don't be simplistic or obtuse. Did I say the cop and the waitress were reacting to the same thing the same way? The cop had nothing to apologize for now, did he? He took a violent, astonishingly drunk and potentially dangerous driver off the road, using non lethal force. What the hell else do you want from him. Contrition?

I personally know of five people who have been mowed down in Taiwan due to drunk drivers. I have no sympathy for this man. That you seem to and seem to have more to say about the guy who took him off the street shows your bias.

Try this out. Might make you feel better.

That's a pretty asinine remark! Are you a frustrated American gun nut who is deeply disillusioned about the world, and likes to play 1st person shooter games?

No, if I were I guess I would drink myself into oblivion and run from the cops on my scooter in the middle of the night.

Good. We agree.

But, perhaps your previous experiences are tainting your view and you are simply happy he got taken down...

Uhm, why aren't you, given your disdain for drunk drivers? It's not such a difficult dichotomy to be happy he got taken off the road and to feel bad that he ruined his entire life in Taiwan. Well, not for me, it isn't. :idunno:

I will say that if you think being shot in the leg is not lethal force, then you are drunk. It is ridiculously easy to die from being shot in the leg.

And he didn't. That's non-lethal force. This of course after he attempted to beat him with his METAL CLUB and failed, I speculate because the guy was so drunk he couldn't feel it wrapping around his wrist and kept coming forward.

I personally think the offender should spend time in jail, especially for running.

Good. Once again, we agree. But no, especially for driving with a bac of .56%. Do you not realize HOW drunk that actually is? People DIE from consuming that much alcohol. That he didn't is indicative of his tolerance.

But, you seem to think the shooting people is a good solution... which is just plain dumb.

Where did I say that or give that impression? A good solution would have been for the guy to not drive off on a high speed drunken scooter chase, or better yet, to not drink and drive in the first place and to spend the 500NT and take a fucking taxi home, or wait, how about to just pull the fuck over and take his lumps.

Your consternation is misplaced on me, poster.

Ah, yes. Of course it is misplaces. I am sorry I feel firearms should not be used unless the offender presents a violent threat. You have shown me the light. Let us run off into the sunset and shoot wildly about ourselves.

If you seriously think that just because he survived it is non-lethal, you are hopeless. Friggin hell, people have survived the electric chair and hangings, and I still call that lethal force. Alas, I have been dragged into an argument with a crazy gun nut. Damnit. I sign out from this thread

Smarm all you want. How do you know that the fantastically drunk guy wasn't a violent threat? From what I know, he has a violent past.

What possible reason would the cop have to make his story up? He tried the baton. It didn't work. He tried the gun.

How about just going with the simplest explanation?

Totally agree. He was driving with a blood alcohol level that would kill some individuals. Considering the state of drunkenness and that he bent the baton, the cop was perfectly justified in using non-lethal force in my opinion.

Sad to see it happen to an old timer and a board member, but we've all seen our fair share of scooter tragedies in Taiwan. Don't be cheap people----get a taxi!
