NO need. My friends told the truth and their appeal was succesful.

If ony I hadn't lied at trial myself about not killing that coolie newspaper boy I may have had my appeal accepted and maybe even had my first sentence reduced instead of increased.

I can't think of a good reason for that except that they honestly, and after what surely must have been considerable soul searching, believe Dean, make of that what you will. Also note this was a prosecutors' appeal, and it was rejected. The article doesn't mention on what grounds.
