You can argue that the cop was in the wrong, however when being attached by a drunk madman almost twice his weight, I can understand that he felt his life in danger and that he acted accordingly.

Holier than you? Holier than what? You do not drink and drive, it's that simple. I have in the past left my car in Taipei and taken a taxi down to Yangmei, easy. And remember - the price of a taxi ride in Taipei is the same as the price for a guiness at the speakeasy. Can afford the extra beer but cannot be bothered to take a taxi?

People driving when drunk deserves whatever, and a shot in the legs, coupled with a prison sentence and a kick out of the country after, sounds about right to me. Support groups on facebook for felons - sheesh . If you want to go see him in prison etc, fine and good, however a public support group? I am ashamed of being associated with something that stupid; wonder what apple daily would think if they found out.

A drunk driver is scum.

... scooter chase and then a fight with the cops - no excuse for that either. He caused all that, even the bullet in his legs.

... will get his well-deserved punishment...

At the end of the day, he fucked up so bad that it's almost funny.

And the pièce de résistance!

Yeah, something like that. Predictable, ain't it.

A good guy does that, all the time? Dunno about that. Certainly, a careful guy. Everyone fucks up; sometimes the price of doing so is high. Fortunately, in this case, the guy who screwed up will be the only one who pays (big time... I imagine his friends and colleagues aren't exactly having a field day).

*sigh*
On the other hand, when I'm walking my girls along the sidewalk, and some shithead narrowly scoots by, endangering them, I don't think: "I bet he's really a good guy at heart, just a bit careless today." I'm too busy keeping the girls safe, giving the bastard a blast, and trying to exercise impulse control to be generous or thoughtful, because otherwise I'd reach out, grab a handlebar or straight arm him, and teach the idiot a lesson. And as far as I know, few of those assholes are drunk.

It's really too bad, but buddy, despite usually being a good guy, was an asshole that night, and got lucky. Yeah, he got shot, but if that's all it takes to learn the lesson, he's getting off lucky. Once upon a time, my favorite uncle had a bad night driving drunk, and an innocent woman died. He learned, she paid. That's worse.

The point is in this day and age, and especially as the goverment has being having a big crackdown on drink driving and the associated deaths and injuries these people cause to themselves and others, that any adult know better than to go out drinking and then being drunk, fleeing from a DUI stop.

John is just another expat arsehole who thinks he is above the law here like many other expats. It is not surprising that they all mostly seem the be English teachers. Why is that?

I wasnt an English teacher.

I didn't just try, I succeeded. Let's not forget that! I tricked the airport staff into letting me out of the country and I tricked Chris and my GF into thinking they wouldnt do any jail time. I tricked many of you into believing I was innocent. Only the judges weren't fooled.

I am going to organize a human rights group to monitor Johns trial and make sure he won't get bad treatment. I've already got a makeup artist and spare passport on hand in case John gets a bad trial like I did.
However, there is one thing I do still believe in, and that is Chris and my GF who are on the whole decent, well meaning, industrious, and friendly. I will miss their generosity of spirit, and their willingness to take it up the arse and do jail time for me. 16 November 1971 is my birthday please do send me presents

Agree.

I mean, nobody would like to be on record as defending a DUI driver exercising a "massive lapse of judgement", right?

And again, drunk angry, prehaps scared and then getting himself into that crap? I cannot see what and who can defend anything like that. Support group? Give him the name of AIT approved lawyers, and let hm call them, that's what he needs.

The media probably wouldn't treat local people like this. It's too bad foreigners can't get a Taiwan ID.

I am sure this guy will be coached on doing an apology just to save on penalty and possible jail time.

Now Maoman has a private group to help this guy. I'm fine with that as I won't be joining. Many are claiming this chap is a nice guy. I'm sorry, nice guys don't behave like this.

If this guy gets a couple of years in jail and then deported I will not shed a tear. Why the oh my god they called him a laowai instead of an American. Then there are those who are claiming the cop is a racist for shooting a white guy who did a runner, then had an accident DUI, then assaulted a police officer before getting shot. Isuppose when he gets whatever sentence if it involves jail time this site will be full of the he got railroaded by the cops and the judges.

Maoman I see you boasted on another F titled forum ( are we allowed to say the name here ) that you enjoy a good smoke and support legalization of some currently illegal "soft" drugs and that you too fear that one day you will be put in jail here for dealing drugs, being a Canadian. Is that a good thing to say when you run expat webites?

The local press gave this DUI case the 30 seconds of fame it deserved and has now been forgotten.

You know us expats and our drug requirements. Everyone likes a good smoke.
By the way, my real name is Tony. Next time you see me call me by that name.

You can also just PM me or call me at 0935-560-995.

Must have one of those politician's coins. You know the ones, with "shoot him" on one side and "give him a medal" on the other?

Sure just like this American who had a gun drawn on him by a local racist cop.

The Taiwanese government should be well within its rights to deport anyone who works illegally here.
