I am just baffled at how full of shit some of the posts here are. The guy was not even charged with assault, ffs! "Trying to get the police officer weapon"?!?! Give me a break.

Boy, another train wreck of a thread in the making. Let the calls for video evidence, accusations of evidence tampering and condemnation of local media begin. Oops, I can see they already have. This guy rode with a BAC that would kill some people, ran from police at high speeds whilst drunk and became so combative and violent as to cause a local police officer to have to use his sidearm.

I'm no noob. I've lived here over a decade, speak and read Chinese well enough to understand local media and have the critical skills to read them critically. I see no reason to doubt what has been reported so far. I don't really care that they called him "laowai" or "fat." Some are latching onto these non-issues as distractions. Did he DUI or not? Did he run from police or didn't he? Everything points toward him having done both.

As a foreign resident in Taiwan, and as a parent, the thought of this guy racing down roads on his barely guided missile like that angers me. His behaviour was nothing short of abhorrent and completely indefensible. As for events leading up to his being shot, frankly, his high-speed runner attempt more than justified it IMO. But I'm also certain he attacked the police. Anyone with any amount of experience with local police knows that local cops err on the side of doing nothing. You'd have to do a lot to get a local cop to respond with any amount of force, let alone shoot you. I'm sure, as in the past, this person's supporters will swarm this thread and attempt to distract, confuse and obfuscate the matter before long. And, of course, the inevitable insults won't be far behind.

I am not brainwashed by The Apple daily or TVBS. I do not speak with "forked tongues." I do, however, think this a terrible example of lawless behaviour. I think the perpetrator needs to make some serious changes in his life, and I think his friends need to rethink the direction they are taking in supporting him. There's being there for a friend, and then there's enabling.

Well said sir. I have been here many years and seen many long termers ride around drunk because they have no respect for this country of it's laws. Of course when they get caught its I'm such a nice guy, its was my first time really, I wont do it again.

A quick trial, 2 years jail and deportation is in order.

I don't know the DUI guy here, he clearly deserves some punishment, but you don't know all the details of the case just like me , so Id say gold your horses until you find out more. Ye guy was a DUI on a scooter and I don't see any real evidence that he attacked the cop, so getting shot seems to have been an extreme move. It's rare in Taiwan for cops to shoot 'runners' so it needs to be investigated. The lack of furore in the usual foreigner bashing media tells its own tale.

Lack of furore is because there is nothing much to report on. A fleeing drunk on a chase to avoid cops crashes, and cops shoot him to prevent an escape. This event had its 30 seconds of news already. Flogging a dead horse are you?

A very valid question. Weapon retention through correct holster selection and placement, as well as defensive tactics are common aspects of police training.

Of course, this may not be applicable, the training aspects that is, with the LEO involved in this action.
