It is overly strict, jail on less than 2 beers is ridiculous.

If they jail term was for a higher blood alcohol I would understand, but this is basically putting everyone who has a drink or two at risk. That number should be 4 or 5.

It was a lot more than 2 beers my dear friend.

DD is right, if the law was impartial if should look at all factors which impair a drivers ability to drive safely, not just alcohol.

However..Taiwan does tend to operate in a kind of free-for-all way, whereby is something is allowed a little it's abused a lot, so sometimes they just don't allow it...at all! This is a mentality that Taiwanese grow with or absorb from seeing numerous examples of.

It's like the national parks, people don't f$%k with then national parks here, but anything outside is fair game. People know the drugs to stay away from and chew beetlenut to their hearts content. It's just the way it is here.

See Immigration Act article 30 & 31:
A person’s Alien (Permanent) Resident Certificate shall be revoked or cancelled if he:
3. Has been sentenced to punishments of imprisonment for one year or greater by a judicial authority, whereas an involuntary offender is exempt

Perhaps not, then. There is a bit of a drink-driving campaign on at the moment so the sentence may be longer than 12 months. Also, because shorter sentences can be commuted to a fine, they tend to get handed out more readily. Dunno. Afraid I don't know much about drink-driving laws here.

Yes you have been saying that "I DONT KNOW" a lot recently. If you don't know then why get all upset. Your friend JOHN did know and he decided to say he fuck it, I'll just do a runner instead cause I'm drunk as a skunk and will end up in jail.

He knew the risks and got caught. NO SYMPATHY FROM ME.
Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave!

I just think 0.03 is a total farce. 0.05 would be much more reasonable, and that is what it was before.

Let me give you an example. You drink on a given evening, do the right thing, spend the night and drive home in the morning but get in an accident because some fucktwat rammed into you. Its the next day, you are stone sober but because you got in an accident you HAVE TO blow (this is part of the new law). Its noon on Sunday and there is still enough alcohol in your blood to make you a criminal, wouldn't have before, does now.

Your life here is hanging in the balance, and all because of the law being carried too far.

The laws are strict because some Asians have a low tolerance for alcohol. Some can get literally pissed on a couple drinks.

It's not like in Europe, where people have been consuming alcohol for millenia and our genetics have been altered as a result.

IF you drive home drunk and drive the next day like ZD did then you get whats coming to you Also many people are not stone sober the next day. Alcohol takes time to be reduced in the body. If you have alcohol in your blood then you are not sober, even if you feel you are.

Well, based on existing cases he does not have to go to jail at all.

The courts here have been very unpredictable in my experience. There is also the obstruction charge.

Well, the beautiful wife of Chen Shui-Bian (Wu Shu-Chen) "only" went to prison for a year for telling her kids how to respond to investigators in her corruption case. Scuffling with a police officer is probably a month of prison maximum (in most countries you won't go to jail for it unless someone is seriously hurt).
