That is far from true. That is like saying all Frenchmen wear berets and walk around carrying baguettes.
Anyway, the main reason this guy in question's friends are supporting him are - wait for it - they are his friends. Not because of any hopelessness in their life, as you seem to imply. In fact, you mainly seem to like to imply that you are better than them. At the risk of being accused of backseat moderating: Please look at the title of this thread. If you want to talk about how wonderful you are because you are not an English teacher, please start a new thread!
The idea to help find the guy's defense are reasonable in that his support network here is the expat community. That is the one of the problems with being an expat: you tend to lose touch with your own homegrown support network. If people on this site want to help the guy get the best possible legal and medical care available as a friend of his, how is that reprehensible? Would not the friends and family of a Taiwanese man in the same circumstances do the same?
A few other points:
1) Lists of lawyers provided by embassies and consulates to their citizens abroad are not recommendations.
2) Of course the guy is not going to tell his side of the story until trial, online anyway.
3) It is of course reasonable and in fact part of the judicial process to question the use of possibly deadly force by a police officer, and to want to question the facts before accepting any one version.
