Still, having people on that forum crucify someone for what would be, in the West, a minor drug sentence, and yet having many key members of that forum support a person charged with alledgedly running over someone while drunk--a serious crime anywhere (vehicular manslaughter) comes across to me as Banana Republic preferential treatments. These foreigners are "out-taike'ing" the Taiwanese over on other expat sites in Taiwan.

You hit the nail on the head with the "preferential treatments" comment. It's a fact explainable by the fact that the perpetrator in the case you reference is personally acquainted with many of the inner circle on Forumosa/Taiwanease. They formed a front to protect him/ prevent condemnation of his actions, even resorting to posting outright lies to confuse the truth in the case (as you can see reproduced in these pages). Most have since gone silent, but some are still at it, as you can see in the more recent posts.

This is a good read abour Mr Forand. Inmate 6071 at Taipei Prison's drug treatment unit is a 29-year-old English teacher from Port Moody who's making use of the long days before his sentencing by learning Mandarin. It's hard to imagine just how much Mathieu James Forand must miss his friends, his family and his former life.

Of course there's a good bit about Stewart Glen also known as Toe save and Popfly and adflob sales and many other smurf names on Taiwanho and Forumosa.
Damn after this is out he may even sign up here who knows. Actually I think he was the most banned poster on ever. Its no wonder after some of the things expats do in Taiwan that the locals hold some of the opinions they do.

Here's what Taiwanese really think of the expat teachers that come to Taiwan. Can you blame them?

I know Matty. I spent my holiday last CNY with him and a bunch of his friends in Bali. I have yet to meet a nicer guy in Taiwan. Now, I didn't know about Matty's involvment in the trade, but I am a pretty good judge of people and I would bet anything that he wouldn't sell to students, if he sells at all. Knowing some of the people on the inside, I have heard what actually went down. Matty was set up.
Forumosa is a vile place made up of well-intentioned nice people, and pedophiles.

But I think we also need to consider where the Taiwanese are coming from-- Remember the history of Opium in China and the consequent humiliation and subjugation by foreign powers. That's why the issue of drug abuse is so taboo in Taiwan.

Especially since it's a foreigner involved, that would only raise the Taiwanese's hackles even more.

It's dangerous I think to criticize their drug policies without understanding the why behind it.

I do, and I also recall the KMT being up to their necks in said opium trade. If there's one thing you can be sure of, it's that if drugs are ever legalized here it will under a government monopoly.

I believe it's my right to do whatever I choose with my body and that the biandang-throwing fuckwits in Taiwan's legislature lack the wisdom, intelligence or common sense to make any kind of decision regarding my life.

But they do. And that's it, really. I ignore that fact at my peril.

However, if there were a legal way for me to smoke hash, I wouldn't mind the odd one (like back in Scotland, where it has now been de-criminalised). The emphasis here is on what I do with MY body

this guy was selling party E and hash to a large portion of the foreign population....if you don't like social drugs yourself then fine....but there's no real need to take the moral high ground.....popping the odd e before you go to luxy, MOS et al does not constitute moral depravity in my book. it is socially acceptable behaviour that the law worldwide is slow to recognise......but just because something is against the law doesn't make it wrong.....exercise some independent thinking people before joining the knee-jerk reactionary brigade......

Well at least I wasn't in the news as being a drug user.

The Taiwanese government should be well within its rights to deport anyone who works illegally here.
